Se especula (con poca solidez) sobre la posibilidad de que fuera hijo ileg?timo del duque de Osuna, uno de los personajes m?s influyentes del momento. Tambi?n se cree que sus padres eran sirvientes de los condes de Molina, cuyo apellido adoptar?a m?s tarde Gabriel al ordenarse monje.Tras estudiar en la Universidad de Alcal? de Henares, donde debi? conocer a Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina ingres? en el convento de la orden de la Merced de Guadalajara, en noviembre de 1600, y tom? los h?bitos dos meses y medio despu?s, en el monasterio de San Antol?n, en la misma ciudad. En 1606 se orden? sacerdote en Toledo, donde estudi? artes y teolog?a. Desde Toledo har?a diversos viajes por la Pen?nsula, con una estancia de dos a?os (1614-15) en el monasterio de Estercuel, en Arag?n. Tambi?n estuvo en Santo Domingo, entre 1616 y 1618, experiencia que reflejar?a en algunas obras. A su regreso, instalado en Madrid, aparecieron sus comedias profanas, mal recibidas por las autoridades eclesi?sticas y pol?ticas, que lo apartaron primero a Sevilla y, a?os despu?s (1625), a Cuenca.Tirso de Molina hubo de esquivar cr?ticas pol?ticas y religiosas por la supuesta ligereza e inmoralidad de sus obras (sobre todo, las s?tiras y las comedias), lo que lo oblig? a escribir muchas veces en el anonimato. La reclusi?n en Cuenca se levant? hacia 1626, pasando a ostentar diversos cargos eclesi?sticos. Durante la estancia de Tirso en Catalu?a redact? la cr?nica de su orden, Historia general de la orden de la Merced. Dicho texto le vali? que el papa Urbano VIII le concediera el grado de maestro y cronista general de su orden en 1639, pero nuevos enfrentamientos con miembros mercedarios lo condujeron a un nuevo retiro a Cuenca al a?o siguiente, de donde solo saldr?, en 1645, con la encomienda del convento mercedario de Soria, retiro en el que pasar? sus ?ltimos a?os.
